Saclay is located about 20 km southwest of Paris and about 10 km south of Versailles, near the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse Regional Natural Park, whose landscapes still bear witness to the presence of powerful lords and influential princes who signify their power by their great estates and emblematic abbeys in the Middle Ages. In the early 1950's, the then called "Centre d'études nucléaires de Saclay" opened at the initiative of Raoul Dautry and Frédéric Joliot-Curie. Since, many public research centers, universities, technological centers of private companies have populated the area. Nowadays, the so-called Plateau de Saclay sees the fast-evolving and largest aggregation of scientific and technological research and high education in France.
CEA is a French government-funded technological research organisation in four main areas: low-carbon energies, defense and security, information technologies and health technologies. A prominent player in the European Research Area, it is involved in setting up collaborative projects with many partners around the world.
